Derek Chenn's Game Programmer Portfolio!

This is my portfolio. Several of my projects are under the Game Projects links.

Building tools for my hobbies.
Date: 12/10/07

A friend introduced me to the game of blackjack. Or more importantly, how it is the only game in a casino that can be beaten. I worked on learning basic strategy until it became second nature, but even memorizing this 300 combination chart doesn't mean I'll get ahead. During the learning process, I realized that my learning process could be greatly enhanced by a computer aid, and sought out ones online. Unfortunately, there weren't that many that are easy to use and free. So I decided to build one.

During the process I realized that if I wanted to learn blackjack I needed to learn card counting. My program is meant for beginners and advanced users.
The program features:

  • The complete basics, the hand signals for cards up or cards down blackjack and an easy to understand guide to getting started playing in a real casino
  • Basic strategy, with various options such as, timed play, selective strategy practice, editing of the playable strategy for different casino rules, editing of table rules, number of playable hands, etc
  • Card counting, an explaination and play options, edit the different card values/counts, bet sizing, deck size, deck cut, hands in play, dealer speed, play timer, running/true count, deck penetration, true bet size, bet logging, AI players, and a 'true' deck that removes used cards from play until the next shuffle, etc
  • Tournament play, featuring AI players with selectable AI, passive/aggressive/hybrid players that react to user's play style
  • Edge calculator for various rules
  • And more!
Once I've completed this program it'll be free to download and use. The 'play' parts of the game are made to simulate true casino play while offering as much aid as possible to maintain play accuracy. A first playable should be availible within a couple of months.

Project Echelon Final Release!
Date: 03/17/06

Project Echelon is an innovative 3rd person 3d game.
This project took us 6-8 months with a team size of only 2. This is our first 3d game (either of us has ever made), and we hope its fun for everyone.

Misc Info:

The design was originally mine.

We were still students while this game was in progress, so while it says it took us 6-8 months, we were still taking 4-6 college classes (and not easy ones at that), if we had nothing else to work on other than this game, it would've probably taken us half that or less.

All art was done by us.

It is multiplayer capable, up to 8 players over LAN.

The other member of the team is Zachary Brown, check out his resume in the Links section.
